The story, so far...

2008-02-26

I needed something at the rear of the car to match the RS4-b7 setup at the front. What could be better then RS4-b7 rear brakes? =) They are supposed to be pretty much bolt on. The only thing that needs modification should be the wire for the parking brake. I don't know how to solve that yet.

Pad. 40mm piston. Also bought the rear splash shields for the RS4 b7. Probably needs some love before it can be mounted on the car. =)

I realized I had not taken any photos of the splash shields I'm modifying for the front brake setup. They are from the VW Phaeton. Basically it just has to get a new plate welded to it so it fits to the front struts.

Aaaah... New years eve! What could be better them to sum this year up here at irry? =) And maybe to speculate about 2008.

Well... As usual not much happened during 2007. The biggest thing would be the two ABT rear hatches that I bought from Germany. I didn't complete the RS4/RS6 front break conversion. And I have not decided what rear brakes to use. So this is two issues that has to be resolved during 2008. At least I tested the prototype adapter for the RS-calipers this weekend. I have made some adjustments to it and now I have to wait for a new prototype. Some pictures of it can be seen below.
Another biggie for 2008 is my job situation. Work work work... I work a lot! And that will probably not change in2008. So I really don't have the time for the S2 any longer and I actually don't have the need for it. So I have started to question whether it's really worth it or if I should sell the car. There is so much that I want to do with it and it will cost me A LOT of money. I still have to complete the RS2 conversion of the rear spoiler and light ramp. I need a set of KW-coilovers or similar. And maybe the biggest issue of them all... I need to paint the whole car. And a paint job for me is not just to rough up the old paint and apply the new paint... We're talking total disassembly with the removal of all panels, the engine and everything. The body will also need some repair and touch up, mainly of both rocker panels. And while the engine is out of the car one would probably want to do some adjustments to it... So the biggest question of 2008 is probably whether I should sell or keep the car.

These exterior shots are actually a couple of months old. But better late then never. =) Divine ABT. ;) More ABT-curves.

Don't hate me for having the fog lights on. =)

irrypic irrypic irrypic irrypic irrypic
The biggest issue with the prototype. This measure was 5mm off from the "blueprint". A sneaky solution to this was to grind 5 mm away from the back of the prototype. Since the prototype was in plastic that was a pretty straight forward task. Another overview picture of the prototype vs the original RS4-b7 bracket. The prototype mounted on the strut. Here the modifications can clearly be seen. Front view.

Since the "2" i got manufactured didn't meat my quality norms I have bought the S5 emblem that will be a better template for the new "2". I will start with creating it in 3D, Maya. Then export it to some cad format and after that hand the file over to some manufacturer.

To bad that the emblem wasn't bundled with the car. =/

Mounted the emblems on the hatch today. Bought new rings at Audi and mounted the new S-emblem with a custom "2". A set of new 2's will be made since this one is far from perfect. It might fool an old lady from 20 meters in total darkness. But anybody else will see that it's not an original piece. Sooo, it does not meet the ISO-NEO2002 standard. =)

irrypic irrypic irrypic irrypic irrypic
Taking the measurements. Spankin' new rings. Yep, that's about it. Trying to fit the S-emblem in. Looks right to me.
irrypic irrypic irrypic irrypic irrypic
To late to change my mind now. The custom "2" mounted. A new set will be made since it's far from perfect. To round shape on the "2" and the chrome is uneven. Urk. =/ Since it's to round it doesn't blend in at all. It reflects the light way different.

Today I Was over at the garage and measured where the emblems are mounted on the original hatch. Think I have enough measurements to fit all the new emblems to the ABT hatch now.
Also had to rewire the cables for the extra brake light. Noticed that the autocheck didn't like my wiring. It screamed "BREMS LICHT". The solution was to connect the feeder line before the cables goes into the autocheck unit (located behind the spare wheel at the back). The earth is connected to the ground wire that originally connects to the pump that pumps water to the spray nozzle on the hatch. Since I removed the wiper on the ABT hatch the pump is not needed any more so felt like a good solution. =)

irrypic irrypic irrypic irrypic
22! The connector with some temporary connections. The white and red thingy is the auto check module with it's "outgoing" connector. This is the connector we have to connect the brake light to. The red/black cable is the brake light. Here's also an earth cable that one could use.

Completed the wiring to the extra brake light today. The first ABT C5 hatch I got had the windscreen with the extra brake light and since that glass was used on the hatch I decided to mount the light, despite that some people will call me "raggare". =) I don't think it looks that bad. So I'll stick with it for a while and see what people say. One strong argument for keeping it is the fact that the RS2 has a high mounted brake light.

Today the glazier was over in the garage and we installed the glass in the hatch! Was not all to easy. The rubber trim under the glass was one stubborn bastard. Also got a small damage to the paintwork on the hatch. =(((( Overall it went good though. Also used one of my monster brake discs as a weight to force the hatch into the proper position. I doubt it will help though but worth a try.
One small problem that I had missed... The first thing the glazier said once the glass was in position was "this was one scratched glass!". Uuuhoooh! I had not seen that the glass was full of small (and big) scratches. =( I hope it is fixable. Otherwise I'll have it like this until the other hatch is reproduced in carbon fibre. Then I take the best of my three glasses and use on that one. Big thanks to Janne at Tages Glas for helping out!

Other side. Damaged paintwork. =( Looks pretty good.

I have not said anything about this here. But as some of you know I actually found another ABT C5 hatch down in germany. Once the deal was settled with Ingo and that hatch was delivered I got an e-mail from Bernd who said he found a hatch for me! At this stage I knew the first hatch had some quality issues so I didn't hesitate for even a millisecond. I told Bernd that I'll buy it! It took a while to get it to Sweden but once here I can only state that it is in twice as good condition as the first one! And it was packed extremely well. I can never thank Bernd enough. Thanks a million Bernd! You rule! =)
The guy that delivered it was from Germany and did not speak one word english. Or hey... Now I exaggerate. I think he actually knew two or three words english. =) But it all worked out fine and it was a funny experience.

irrypic irrypic irrypic irrypic irrypic
Huge package straight from Germany! This is what I'm talking about! This is how a rarity like this should be packed! =) Looking good. And hey... Ain' t that Floddy-red? =) This is sad. One dead fly, straight from Germany. I hope he have been in quarantine or I might get the customs after me. =) Some Porsche badge on it. Strange that not more S2's have this badge. Not that bad after all.
irrypic irrypic irrypic irrypic irrypic
Side view. More pr0n. Mmmm! The old <92 glass with the quattro logo in it. Repainted at least once.
irrypic irrypic
Alles ok? ALLES FUCKING GREAT! =) Now it will have to rest on a pallet until I have the time to prepare it for it's next adventure... Carbon fibre baby! =)

2007-08-17

The new tires and the wheel alignment in combination with the Whiteline RARB is just super! The car is so much funnier to drive now. So fun that I pushed it a bit to hard on a bad road. There was a huge bump in the road that made me and the car air born for a while. When we landed the lambda sensor nut came loose from the downpipe. =( I had no other choice then continue my trip home for another 100km. I did not really know how to fix this. But... I asked "Dr Ernie" who my parents happen to be, almost, neighbors to. "No problems!" he said. =) So big thanks to DTE Racing that fixed my downpipe. He also mounted an extra nut for wide band lambda. The problem there is that I measured it's position when the front of the car was in the air so the shock absorbers in the front was in their end position... And, I never thought of that the steering bars also change their position then. Soooo... To sum it up, the wide band lambda will most probably not fit now. =( But I can not blame anyone else then myself for this fatal mistake.
Anyway, to remove the downpipe might sound like a simple task. But since it's not an original downpipe I have to remove right drive shaft from gearbox, cover around drive shaft, right wishbone, middle section of exhaust pipe and of course everything around the turbo. Painful operation.

I also found a set of PFC brake pads for my front porsche calipers. There was nothing left on the old ones and the RS6-calipers will not be mounted this season.

Also replaced the cap over the fuel pump. The frequent reader might remember that it was leaking. I never had the time to look for cracks in the lid so I just bought a new one, sigh. But when it was time to replace it it had not leaked. DAMN! So must have been the gasket after all. But in pure frustration I replaced the old one with the new lid.

And... Oooh... Yeaaah! The ABT C5 hatch is back from the painter. At a first glance it looks ok. But when looking a bit closer there 's a couple of drips and on at least one place the underlying repair is visible since the filler have raised up a bit. That they did warn me for though. And after mounting the hatch I noticed that it does not have best fit. Under the wing where the hatch should align to the body the hatch actually stands out a bit. The problem is that this can not be adjusted so this hatch has probably been involved in some kind of accident or something. Things like this makes me sad. Though we will try to force the hatch down when we glue the glass back. Se if that helps.
Other then that it looks pretty good. It's a bit strange to see it on the car without the glass in it. And it takes a while to get used to not have the wing stretching out over the C-pillar. Hopefully I will love it once it's all completed.

irrypic irrypic irrypic irrypic irrypic
One nut that made me go nuts! The drive shaft has to be removed from the gearbox. =( A couple of different places where wide band lambda sensor could be mounted. Me strangling the downpipe once it came loose. That bastard! Hmm... Wonder if this white/yellow covering is another evidence that the car indeed runs a bit hot on the fumes.
irrypic irrypic irrypic irrypic irrypic
Downpipe back from DTE Racing. Thanks Ernie! You are a genius! =) Looks good! Here to! And the inside! PFC brake pad for the front.
irrypic irrypic irrypic irrypic irrypic
The bastard cap that I thought had a crack in it and it's replacement. The fuel gauge sender. new cap mounted. The hatch back from the painter! Mmmmm!
irrypic irrypic irrypic irrypic irrypic
No more hideous wing over the C-pillar! Old vs new. And as usual a crappy picture from my crappy camera. Looks a bit nude. Yummie. Not perfect aligned. =((
irrypic irrypic irrypic
It's actually better at this side. But on the picture it looks like it's worse.

Trying with some weights to see if it can be forced in position. Nice wing profile! =)

2007-06-28

Ooooooo my back hurts! The sanding and repair of the ABT-hatch took a while! I used the "Dremmel" to carefully grind all the cracks that I found. Quite a few actually. Then I used plastic fibre filler to add some strength to it. Plastic fibre filler is really a pain to work with but good for repairs like this.

I also managed to remove the glass out of the hatch! Was actually pretty simple. "Tages Glas" in my hometown provided me with the wire that's used to saw through the glue that holds the glass in place. It was a bit tricky on some places but it only took a couple of nervous hours to remove the glass. And I didn't use any special tools other then the wire. Now I have to find someone that can put some tinted film on the glass. I guess I could do it my self, I have done it on other cars. But I don't think I can do it as perfect as I want it. One of those things I rather leave to the pros. =)

Today I delivered the hatch to the painter. Could barley get the hatch into my parents Mazda. I really don't know how I will get the hatch from the painter once it's painted. Maybe rent a minivan or something. First I thought of mounting it over at the painter but that feels a bit un secure and the risk of stressing it and breaking something in the process is imminent. But anyway's, now it's up to the painter to fine tune the hatch. I only fixed the big issues. And let's hope that the filler I used on the repairs doesn't sink in to much once the paint work is done.

I also had the car over at "Bilteknik" today for a new wheel alignment and. I do not now how it's possible since I barley haven't driven the car since the last wheel alignment but a lot of the values were messed up. Now they are all good again!

Oh, and a a sad day the other day. The car passed 150000km. =( I missed it with 6 kilometers. Pretty annoying, wanted to photograph it exactly on the 15000 mark.

irrypic irrypic irrypic irrypic irrypic
Urk! 150000km. =/ One of the grinded cracks. Hey! Who grinded a smiley on my wing!? Plastic fibre filler on place. And after it's sanded. Needs fine tuning with regular filler.
irrypic irrypic irrypic irrypic irrypic
More plastic fibre filler. Here to. Seems like this spot on both sides of the wing are the most abused spots. No more "wisher washer"! I think that's german for wiper. =) It's history! Fine tuned.
irrypic irrypic irrypic irrypic irrypic
There's just no end to the sanding. No glass! I managed to remove it without breaking it! =) This is the wire used to saw through the glue. The "frame" that the glass was glued to.
irrypic irrypic irrypic
Now let's hope that this trim is included in the set of trims I ordered from Audi.

Let's ship it out! Not earthquake proof but it survived a bumpy drive to the painter at least.

Trying a new layout of my page here at irry.com. Better or worse?

The hatch is packed and ready for delivery to the painter. Will deliver it tomorrow. Will also take the car to the workshop that will align the wheels for me.

I continued with the inside today and finished it late this evening. We turned the hatch over and I continued to sand the outside. The outside was actually pretty easy and done in 1-2 hours or so. The inside was far worse. Sloppy paint job and many corners that was hard to sand. But I want it to be as good as possible so the paint job turns out good both on the inside and the outside. That will make the process of building mould of it a lot easier. Yes, this baby will be replicated in a very limited amount. =)
Two cracks surfaced on the wing. One big and one smaller. Looks like it's not just in the filler. =(

The whole hatch roughly sanded.

We moved the hatch home to my parents garage so I can work on it night and day. Need to fix all the big issues until monday and then leave it to the painter. The old, blue, paint job is pretty sloppy and under it is a couple of repairs. Some minor ones and some major ones. Will write some more tomorrow or the day after when I have sanded it a bit more.

irrypic irrypic irrypic irrypic irrypic
The hatch in my parents garage. Seems like it has been Floddy-red once upon a time. Not strange since most ABT C5's were red. Also some ABT (?) fabrication number. More nudity. Seconds before I started sanding it. Some hours later. Seems like it first was red. Then repaired and repainted red again. And later it was repainted blue.

This corner seems to be the worst spot.

The other side. Not as beaten as the right one.

Mmmmm! Vacation! Finally some time to work at the car! I got my package from Ingo in Hanover this monday! After 7 years search I finally own an ABT C5 rear hatch! WEEEEOOOO! Schenker that transported it from Germany to Sweden did abuse it a bit. But it will not be all to hard to fix. Will probably start working on it tomorrow. I will for sure post more pictures of my new lil baby. =)
Today I also got new tyres mounted. A friend that works at "Däckia" here in my hometown hooked me up with a set of Nokian Z 225x40x18. I was really really worried that it would look odd with 225 instead of 235 on my wheels. But it looks way way waaaaaay better then I had expected. So I'm really satisfied. I picked 225 instead of 235 since my old 235s tended to hit the front fenders when driving a bit inspired. =) And it actually seems like 225s did the trick! Tried some inspired driving and so far they have not touched the fenders. =))))

irrypic irrypic irrypic irrypic irrypic
The "secret" package has arrived! Sent from germany by almighty Ingo! Thanks a billion again man! =) Seems like some guy at schenker have ass raped the package though. The cardboard looks pretty messed up. I expected the worst before opening it up.

Oh... So there it is? But... What is it? Just a rear hatch? What's up with that?

Minor damage.
irrypic irrypic irrypic irrypic irrypic
Ouch. More damage. But hey! What's up with that wing? Something is missing? Or is it!? Hmmm... More damage. Totally fixable! =) No worries. w000t! Even has a brake light. Wonder how common that is.
irrypic irrypic irrypic
Use it or not use it? The glass differs from the "regular ones". More scratches. And here it is. In it's full glory! No! It's not just a hatch! Nothing is missing on the wing! It's genuine ABT C5 S2 rear hatch! WEOOOOO! Priceless! At least for me. =)
HEY! Stop drooooooling! =)

Have been in phone with Schenker today because I wondered where my secret package from Germany was. The guy I talked to sounded a bit troubled and he said that the package had been stopped in some town here in Sweden and marked as "damaged goods". MOTHERF**KER! He said he had to find out more about it and will call me tomorrow or something.

I took some days off from work and worked on the car. I got my whiteline rear anti roll bar from Corey at www.quattronics.co.uk. Had some problems fitting it because two of the original bolts were to short for the new brackets. Other then that it was a 10 minute operation to replace the old rarb. =)
Also tested the car with the new 044 fuel pump. As I said before I thought my old pump was on the verge on giving up since the engine runs a bit hot. Now I know that there was nothing wrong with the old trusty original 040 pump. Because the engine still runs to hot. At full load the exhaust temp peaks at 1000 degrees Celsius. =( Dunno what to do about it actually. =/
Also swapped the tyres around. A faulty wheel adjustment killed the front tyres last season so I put those at the back of the car. I'll order new tyres this week. This time 225x40x18. Might look a bit "german" on my rims but I'm so sick of the 235's hitting the fenders so I'll have to try this setup.
And the damned cap over the fuel pump leaks. =/ Guess there's a crack in it or something.

irrypic irrypic irrypic irrypic irrypic
There's always something that leaks in my car. =/ This was all dry one week ago. The car has just been standing still in the garage. Must be a crack in the lid or something. New sweet RARB! Looks a bit nicer then the old one. A bit thicker. A bit more adjustable. =)

w000t! It's on the ground!

Took the bathtub for a lil spin. In good company.

Mmmkay folks! More then a year has passed since the last update. Yes, I should be ashamed but I have worked so much that updates on this page and updates on the car and life in general had to be put on hold. From now on I will only write in english on these pages. I'm pretty lousy at the grammar and the spelling so have patience with me. =) You might also have noticed that the text is no longer center aligned. I really hate center aligned text so all new text will be written with left alignment. I'll leave the swedish text below centered on purpose...

The text under the new pictures is pretty much describing what has happened during this year. I'm waiting for a Whiteline RARB that hopefully arrives next week. Also waiting for an exotic part from germany, more about that in the next update. =)

I suspected that the old fuel pump didn't deliver as much fuels as it was supposed to. The exhaust temperature was dangerously high. The original was replaced with a Bosch 044 one.
This leakage is what meat me when the carpet had been removed. Wonder if it's the gasket or the lid itself that leaks...?

I was not all to happy about how I had mounted the cup-spoiler underneath the RS2-bumper.

Looks really odd when the back hangs out like that. Dunno what I was thinking.
2006, June
Guess I aligned it to the front of the bumper.
2006, June
The spoiler needed a new paint job because the last paint job was a mess. Therefore it felt like good timing to realign and reseat it.

Yep! That's better!

Also had swedish company Turbocenter fit this heat sensor in my RS2-turbo. It's for my Omori exhaust temperature gauge.

The RS2-setup requires a 300kPa map-sensor and some new chips.

Hmm... How da hell did they align my wheels? Had a four wheel alignment just before the gearbox gave up and now the wheels looks like this? Oh man...

Cleaning up in the garage. Time to move to another one. 4-5 years worth of replaced gaskets and various "belts" hanging on my totem pole.

Oljepluggen i diffen bak.

MAN SKÄMS!
